FC St. Pauli vs. SC Paderborn 07
Millerntor-Stadion | 06.02.2022, 13:30
FC St. Pauli were held to a 2-2 draw by SC Paderborn on Saturday evening. After Maximilian Dittgen had given the Boys in Brown an early lead, the visitors levelled through Dennis Srbeny on 37. Etienne Amenyido restored the advantage a minute before half-time, only for Marco Stiepermann to equalise late on.
Head coach Timo Schultz made three changes to his starting lineup compared with the derby. James Lawrence made way for Philipp Ziereis in central defence, with Luca Zander coming in at right-back for Sebastian Ohlsson and Etienne Amenyido replacing Finn Ole Becker in midfield.
The Schultz XI took control early on and got their reward in the fifth minute when Amenyido slipped the ball into the box for Max Dittgen to collect the pass and smack the ball into the roof of the net on the turn. Five minutes later the assist-giver could have completed a perfect start for his team after receiving the ball from Zander, but his effort was blocked at the last second by a defender.
Much of the ensuing action unfolded in midfield. The Boys in Brown enjoyed the lion's share of the possession, but it was Paderborn who went closest when Florent Muslija struck a free-kick just past the right-hand upright. That marked the start of a decent spell for the visitors, who saw more of the ball without being able to capitalise.
That was to change in the 37th minute, however. A ball into the box found Dennis Srbeny, who wasted no time in unleashing a shot past Vasilj from a narrow angle for the equaliser. The response from the Boys in Brown came seven minutes later. A wonderful passing move involving Guido Burgstaller and Maximilian Dittgen culminated with the ball finding its way to Amenyido, who kept his composure in front of goal to restore his team's advantage.
An unchanged Schultz XI emerged for the second half, but it was Paderborn who fashioned the first chance in the 54th minute in the shape of Jannis Heuer. His shot on the turn went wide of the goal, however. Moments later the visitors went even closer when Jakov Medić almost diverted a cross into his own net. Fortunately, Nikola Vasilj got down quickly to turn the ball round the post for a corner, which came to nothing.
At the other end, Marcel Hartel had an opportunity to extend the lead following a square ball from substitute Finn Ole Becker, only for a defender to get a last-minute block in. Paderborn stepped up their efforts in search of an equaliser, and the game ebbed and flowed as the Boys in Brown, for their part, attempted to hit the visitors on the break. In what was now a high-intensity contest the only chance of note, however, was a 75th minute effort from Muslija that flew just wide of the post.
With the game in the closing stages, Paderborn threw everything at it and got their reward in the 84th minute when Marco Stiepermann angled a drive through a crowd of players into the far corner of the goal to hand his side a late equaliser.
