FC St. Pauli vs. Karlsruher SC

After the 3-1 home win over Karlsruhe, we caught up with the two head coaches and midfielder Marcel Hartel.

Head coach Timo Schultz: "We were really good in the first half, but Karlsruhe had more grip in the second. They went for a simpler approach via their target man, Hofmann. I don't like to do this really, but there has to be special praise for Simon Makienok today. It felt like there were three of him on the pitch."

Marcel Hartel: "The first half was super. We had a very good mix of long balls and passing play and we got forward quickly. It was very, very good from us today. In the second half, we didn't do so well. Our play was a bit too complicated and that allowed Karlsruhe back into it. They're a very good team who are always capable of scoring. In my view, we deserved to win today, though. We want to take the fans with us every time we play at home, and they were outstanding today."

Christian Eichner (Karlsruhe coach): "Congratulations to you and your team, Schulle. I've impressed upon everyone again how you have to play here. We had no physical presence today, we didn't put in the tackles and we didn't get to the ball or go for it. The third goal was the best example of that. That's not how you defend against that triangle. It's only logical then that you find yourselves three down then instead of one. This league is ready for anything. If you do have a poor first half occasionally, you have to make sure you only go in one down. We changed a few things at half-time. With a bit of luck, we could have got a second, I'd have been up for it, but we didn't do enough. I'm OK with the way we responded."
