Amenyido: "Training is no replacement for playing"

A number of players have celebrated their return to action in recent weeks, among them Etienne Amenyido. The versatile striker, who arrived from VfL Osnabrück in the close season, was sidelined for a long time before finally making his competitive debut in the 4-0 defeat of Rostock in late October. On Tuesday, Amenyido took time out to talk to the media.

Etienne Amenyido on…

...his current shape: "It felt good to be back on the pitch after such a long time. I really enjoyed it. I want more than there’s been so far, of course. The 45 minutes in the friendly against Viborg helped me to get back in the rhythm. Training is no replacement for playing."

...the difficult start after his early injury: "It wasn’t perfect and obviously I’d envisaged things going differently. But I’m back now and that’s what counts. This is my proper start now."

...the fierce competition up front and his style of play: "Everyone’s going flat out and that’s good. The team benefit from that, we all do. I want to play, of course, but I’m not thinking that far ahead. I want to get some training sessions behind me first, stay fit and well and stake a claim by showing what I can do. I hope then to get some more playing time in the league. I think I’m a different kind of striker than Simon Makienok, for example. I operate more in the spaces. I’ll see how I can bring my qualities to the pitch, but I think I can be a factor."

...his personal targets and those for the team: "I’d be delighted to get a starting berth or a goal, but I’m taking it step by step. I want to get some more minutes under my belt first and if I then get a place in the starting lineup I’ll obviously be delighted. I think a lot is possible. We have to end the first half of the season well now and then we’ll prepare for the second. I think we’ll definitely consolidate our position at the top end of the table."

...his international career with Togo: "I hope I get another chance to play sometime, but that’s not relevant at the moment."

...forthcoming opponents Darmstadt: "They’re very direct in front of goal, especially with the two strikers. They have a lot of quality there. They’re on a roll at the moment and won’t be easy to stop, but I think we’ll find a way to go about it."
