The mood in the mixed zone after the 5-0 win at Atlas Delmenhorst in the first round of the DFB Cup was one of satisfaction. Here’s the pick of the post-match reaction.
Sascha Burchert: “We knew Delmenhorst switch the play quickly and attack and although we had so much possession, they had one or two situations that shouldn’t be happening. I’ve made two competitive appearances for the Under-23s and so I was looking forward to the cup game here. I enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun on my competitive debut for the senior side and I’ll prepare for my next game whenever that comes. Everyone on the pitch today gave their all. It’s going very well and that’s great. We should have been further in front a bit earlier but saw the game out in professional fashion.”
Hauke Wahl: “I’m really glad we’ve gone through. The first round can always be a stumbling block. We didn’t score enough goals in the first half and Delmenhorst could have equalised straight after half-time when they were clean through on goal, but Beucke was there and put himself at the service of the team. We can rely on him, and he showed that today. What we take from the game today was that in emotional terms we were on a level where we did a lot of things right, but we have to carry a greater threat in the final third and score more goals.”
Danel Sinani: “It was a very important game for us. I picked up a minor injury at training camp but I’m feeling good again. I’m fit and livelier and that’s mainly down to the training sessions. Keeping a clean sheet was also very important today. It’s never easy against teams who are highly motivated against us. I won a cup-winners medal in Luxembourg and know how to approach such important games. I hope we go far; we certainly want to.”
Marcel Hartel: “It was a tough game. We had some good chances and didn’t take them, especially in the first half. We created more chances in the second half by getting the ball out wide and then the goals came. Delmenhorst had one or two good chances as well, so it was good we added to our tally. We didn’t lose our concentration today and were clear in our actions, and that’s what we take from the game.”
Dominik Schmidt (Atlas Delmenhorst head coach): “It was a tough game, as we expected. We were bit lucky not to go behind earlier than we did in the opening stages, but my boys showed they can play football as well. We prepared for a lot, but St. Pauli were simply too good for us. It was clear the game was over when they made it 2-0. I wish St. Pauli all the best for this season.”
