GÜNTHER SIGNS PROFESSIONAL TERMS

FC St. Pauli have handed Under-23 defender Luca Günther his first professional contract. The 21-year-old came through pre-season with the senior squad and his contract of employment has now been adjusted accordingly.

Günther joined the club's youth setup from VfB Lübeck in the summer of 2017 and progressed through the Under-17 and Under-19 ranks before stepping up to the Under-23 squad at the beginning of the 2020/21 season. He has made a total of 45 fourth-tier Regionalliga appearances to date, contributing two goals and four assists.

Reaction to the deal

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Luca gave a very good account of himself in pre-season and at training camp and quickly adapted to the higher level. He's proved he can be an option at on the right side of defence and fully deserves this adjustment to his contract."

Head coach Fabian Hürzeler: "Luca is a player who always wants to learn and never rests on his laurels. Not every youth player copes as well with the step-up to the professional level as he’s done and that's also a testament to the good physical shape he's in. I look forward to continuing working with him."

Luca Günther: "I'd like to thank the club officials for the trust they've placed in me and aim to repay them with good performances. I can improve every day training with the professional squad. My goal is to take this opportunity to go the next step in my development."
