LUHUKAY: "YOU DON'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU DESERVE"

After the official post-match press conference on Friday evening, Jos Luhukay stayed behind to talk to the Hamburg-based media about his team's performance at Dynamo Dresden. Here's a breakdown of his most important statements.

The performance: "We saw a team that carried on where it left off last week. It's been a while since we've played so well away from home and so it's such a shame to come away empty-handed. That's the agonising side of football – you don't always get what you deserve. After the equaliser we were close to getting a second. If I'm going to be critical it's that we didn't land the punch in the final third to get that second goal and go on to take the three points back to Hamburg. Dynamo then scored out of the blue. We gave the ball away too cheaply there. Our back three had never played together, but Jan-Philipp Kalla, Justin Hoogma and Daniel performed with aplomb, both defensively and in possession."

The disputed penalty: "I had to look at it again but the ball hit Jan-Philipp in the ribs, the mark was there for all to see. I thought the referee was going to change his mind but he didn't in the end. Next season we'll be able to have another look at situations like that one instead of making a decision within a second or two. In the top two divisions it still isn't clear what a handball is. There have been so many controversial calls in both leagues in the last few weeks and months. It's extremely important to decide what's handball and what isn't."

His football philosophy: "I want the lads to be much bolder instead of blindly hitting long balls. Dresden have two centre-backs taller than 1.90 m, so you have to look for footballing solutions. The lads are making progress, though. We were good as far as the penalty box but lacked precision and vision once we got there. We need that to put ourselves in positions to shoot. We have to do better in that respect."

The changes to the team: "I had to replace Marvin, Flumi and Buchti. Marvin and Flumi were key players in the centre of the park against Regensburg. At the moment, I have to do whatever instils confidence in the players. I have a lot of respect for the way they have taken to playing in unaccustomed positions and doing it so competently. That gives us hope for the future."

The injury situation: "Johannes Flum and Marvin Knoll couldn't take part in the final training session. It was too much of a risk to take them to Dresden with us. They'll both be examined again by the club doctors. Ryo had some problems with his foot. We had to take him off because it was too much. He'll also undergo tests and we'll know more by Monday at the latest. We have eight days until the final home game and so there's plenty of time for us to prepare."

Finn Ole Becker's full debut: "It was his first start – away from home and in front of a big crowd. He's a player who can control a game. He was important for us in that position and showed his class on occasions, but he also had some moments where I have to be critical as a coach and I'll show them to him. Finn has a long way to go and still has things to learn, but what I saw in the 90 minutes gives hope of more to come. I'm happy to have a homegrown talent like him who's made the breakthrough and is an example for our youth players to follow."
