Next up for the Boys in Brown after the 1-1 home draw against Erzgebirge Aue is a trip to the Alte Försterei on Saturday to face Union Berlin. We've taken a closer look at our neighbours in the table and, as usual, pulled together a few facts and figures.
A team of goalscorers
At Union it's almost as if everyone scores at will. They have plenty of variation, that's for sure, as eleven different players have already found their way onto the scoresheet. With 23 goals to date Union have the third-best attack in the league behind Kiel (29) and Nürnberg (26). Kiel and Nürnberg have had eight different scorers, by the way, the Boys in Brown seven.
Bags of experience
The Iron Ones are the oldest side in the league, going with experience as the only team with an average age of 26. In Marcel Harten (21), Daniel Mesenhöler (22) and Grischa Prömel (22), head coach Jens Keller has used only three players under the age of 23 this season. In comparison, six players in this age category have appeared for St. Pauli. The Boys in Brown are 25.25 years old on average.
Prolific Polter
Sebastian Polter leads the way in terms of goals and assists for Union. With four assists and six goals to his name, the striker has had a hand in more than a third of Union's strikes this term. Polter has been busy dishing out the punishment as well. A total of 40 fouls puts him way out in front in the infringements category. By comparison, second-placed Robert Glatzel (Heidenheim) has committed "just" 29 fouls.
Unbeaten at home
A run of four wins in a row came to an end last weekend when Union were held to a 1-1 draw at MSV Duisburg. Their home form this season has been particularly impressive. Jens Keller's side are unbeaten at the Alte Försterei and have taken 11 from a possible 15 points. They have racked up 14 goals at home so far - the second-best total in the league - only Darmstadt have scored more (16). Away from home Union have lost just twice, 3-2 at league leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1-0 at SV Sandhausen.
Good things come in sixes
The head-to-head record in recent years does not exactly speak for the Boys in Brown, who haven't won any of the last five meetings between the two sides. Our last victory was a 3-0 success at the Millerntor in October 2014. The overall record is very evenly balanced, with seven wins, eight defeats and six draws.
Steady improvement
Union have steadily been edging their way to the promotion places since the 2013/14 season. That year they finished ninth in the table with 44 points. Then came seventh place (47 points) and sixth (49 points), while last season they missed out on a play-off place by the narrowest of margins when finishing fourth (60 points). With 12 matches played (22 points), Jens Keller's team find themselves again in fourth spot.
