BOYS IN BROWN HELD TO GOALLESS DRAW BY AARHUS

The second warm-up game of pre-season against Danish top-division club Aarhus GF was a high-intensity affair despite ending in a no-score draw. Sören Tengstedt hit the crossbar for the visitors five minutes from time, the closest either side came to scoring.

For new head coach Timo Schultz, it was the first outing under competitive conditions at the Millerntor. He started with a back four in a lineup featuring three summer signings in Leart Paqarada, Rodrigo Zalazar and Lukas Daschner. The first chance of the game fell to the Boys in Brown in the seventh minute when wide man Maximilian Franzke cut inside from the left and slipped the ball to Henk Veerman, whose left-foot effort missed the target by some way.

As the half wore on the visitors slowly took control, winning several set pieces. They first threatened with nine minutes on the clock. Gift Links was allowed half-a-yard of space and his shot shaved the post on its way out. Marvin Senger then had to step in to concede a corner as Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson shaped to shoot. The Boys in Brown gained more momentum in the latter stages of the half, but they lacked the final ball.

Schultz rang the changes at half-time, sending out what was virtually a completely new team for the second period. Svend Brodersen soon had a chance to shine when the unmarked Alexander Munksgaard met a Patrick Olsen corner on the volley, but the substitute keeper was perfectly placed to make the save. At the other end, Marvin Knoll tested Kasper Kristensen with a free-kick from 20 metres out, the Aarhus custodian guiding the ball out for a corner.

The Danish top-flight club, who face Finnish side FC Honka in a Europa League qualifier on Thursday, twice came close to snatching a winner in the closing stages. Sören Tengstedt struck the crossbar on 79 and seven minutes later was denied by Brodersen, who tidied up after giving the ball away. All in all the visitors may have had the better of the chances but they are further in their preparations, with their first competitive game just days away.
