SCHULTZ: "WE HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT AND WILL LIVE WITH IT"

The eagerly awaited top-of-the-table matchup with Werder Bremen ended honours even after 90 minutes, a result the Boys in Brown could live with in view of the way the game went, though questions were asked about the penalty that wasn't given and the handball in the run-up to Werder's equaliser.

Head coach Timo Schultz: "It's not very often you have two unhappy coaches at the post-match press conference. We took the lead and had a couple of chances to add to it. Bremen, on the other hand, showed they're a quality team in the 90 minutes today. They were a constant threat – in the first half when we lost the ball, in the second on account of the excellent structure to their play when in possession. We resisted with everything we had and had our moments in transition that we failed to make good use of. All in all you have to say that so much happened during the game that neither coach is happy at the end and both would have liked to have taken all three points. Nevertheless, both sides have added another point to their tally and that can prove vital. We sit here almost every other week and are asked to explain some refereeing decision or the other. If that's how he saw it and reached his decision, we all have to accept it. We have to live with it and we will live with it. Looking at the way VAR has gone as a whole, it's more grist for the mill for those who want to see it done away with."

Nikola Vasilj: "I think we deserved the point. We fought throughout and kept pushing each other. We were in the game slightly better in the first half because we played football more. In the second half it was more of a battle."

Philipp Ziereis: "We played a very good side. Both teams had their chances and phases in the game where they were more dominant. Overall, it was a deserved share of the spoils. There were one or two unfortunate decisions against us but we have to accept it. The Bremen player left his leg in the way when we had the penalty shout and it was one of those that could have gone either way. I've seen them given. I didn't see the situation with the handball before their goal myself, but I heard he clearly played the ball with his hand. In the end, it's down to the referee, though. Not getting the penalty and then conceding obviously influenced the outcome of the match, but that's football and we have to live with it. All in all, we were a bit unlucky but there's no point getting worked up about it. We'll have some luck ourselves in the next few weeks and will take the point today."

Ole Werner (Werder Bremen coach): "It was a top-quality second-division game that went back and forth. It took us 12 minutes to get going but then we did very well in my view and had the better chances, which we didn't take. Not taking the lead and turning the game our way was where we fell short today. Then we went behind. We gathered ourselves at half-time and showed a great response to the scoreline. We're glad to take a point with us but aren't entirely happy because there was more in it for us on account of our chances."
