Good news! FC St. Pauli and Svend Brodersen have agreed terms on a contract extension until 30 June 2021. The deal reached by director of sport Uwe Stöver and the 21-year-old goalkeeper also includes an option for a further two years.
"Svend is a role model when it comes to attitude and identification with the club," said director of sport Uwe Stöver. "He's also developed in a positive way. Extending his contract was the logical consequence for us. Svend is a good example of how a talented academy player can make the transition to the professional squad. We're looking forward to the next few years with him."
Head coach Markus Kauczinski also expressed his delight over the new deal. "In Svend we're happy to have a young, ambitious and talented goalkeeper in our team long term. He works incredibly hard and has steadily improved in the work with Mathias Hain, which is why he's currently our number two keeper. Svend has already demonstrated his great talent in the Under-23s and with his call-ups for the Germany Under-21 team.“
The young keeper had a number of fundamental questions to clarify before agreeing to sign a new contract: "The most difficult thing about the negotiations with St. Pauli for me was how to separate my job as a professional footballer from the perspective of a passionate fan, which I will always remain. The importance of developing as a player cannot be denied, which is why I'm very happy about the trust that was placed in me in summer. The esteem in which I'm held by the management was really apparent in the final talks. With a free heart I was then happy to be able continue combining the two components of 'job' and 'emotional connection', which I consider an incredible privilege and is something I'm very grateful for. I'm looking forward to the coming period!"
Brodersen continued: "I'd like to take the opportunity to thank the youth coaches and league coaches who have always encouraged me with their well-meaning criticism. I'd also like to mention my goalkeeper rival of many years, Sebastian Kalk, who pushed me to be my best at youth level and vice versa."
The 21-year-old Hamburg native stepped up to the professional squad in the 2015/16 season. To date, he has made 69 Regionalliga appearances for the Under-23s and four appearances for the Germany Under-20s, taking part in the 2017 U-20 World Cup in South Korea.
