FC St. Pauli kicked off pre-season with an 11-0 win against a Celle Select XI on Saturday afternoon. New recruits Rico Benatelli and Boris Tashchy both got on the scoresheet at the Günther Volker Stadium.
In temperatures soaring to 29 degrees, the Boys in Brown tested their new kit for the first time under competitive conditions against a select XI representing the Lower Saxony city of Celle. The bulk of the home side was made up of players from newly promoted fifth-tier outfit MTV Eintracht Celle, with the rest coming from nine different local clubs.
The Boys in Brown seized the initiative straightaway, Dimitrios Diamantakos hitting the crossbar from a Marvin Knoll free-kick in the sixth minute. The Greek striker made no mistake 60 seconds later, however. Jakub Bednarczyk knocked a low ball into the middle, where Diamantakos converted from a central position. Six minutes after that the frontman turned provider, teeing up Benatelli for his first goal for the club. After a drinks break midway through the half, Jos Luhukay's team turned on the turbo and Waldemar Sobota and Kevin Lankford both bagged braces to go in at the break six goals to the good.
Luhukay fielded 11 new players for the second half and they were just as hungry for goals as the first-half selection. Christopher Buchtmann converted from close range to make it 7-0 on 51 and Christian Conteh added an eighth five minutes later. The fleet-footed winger then made goals for Boris Tashchy on 59 and Under-23 loan player Jannes Wieckhoff 12 minutes after that. Buchtmann completed the scoring just before end, netting from the penalty spot after a foul on Florian Carsten. All in all, a successful start to pre-season.
