Boys in Brown beaten by only goal in second pre-season friendly

FC St. Pauli slipped to a 1-0 defeat against fourth-tier outfit SV Drochtersen/Assel in the second warm-up game of pre-season. The only goal of the game came from a set piece.

Head coach Alexander Blessin rang the changes compared with the opening pre-season friendly against Grün-Weiß Firrel. New signing Andréas Hountondji made his first appearance in brown-and-white in almost a completely different starting lineup, with Ben Voll also replacing new signing Simon Spari in goal.

Voll was called into action seven minutes in when Maximilian Geißen pulled the trigger from some 25 metres out. His shot proved no problem for the FCSP keeper, however. Operating in the familiar 3-4-3 formation, the Boys in Brown struggled to get going early on. That saw Drochtersen unleash another attempt on goal through Jorik Wulff in the 12th minute that missed the target by some distance.

The Blessin XI registered their first shot on goal, a free-kick from Mathias Pereira Lage that flew down the middle to the keeper, in the 17th minute. After that, they gradually came more into the game without ever really threatening, a situation that remained the same following the introduction of Scott Banks for Hountondji on 33. Their first big chance took until the 45th minute to arrive. Joel Chima Fujita motored through the midfield and let fly from a central position, and Patrick Siefkes was left stretching to make the save.

Blessin replaced all his outfield players at half-time and switched to a back four. Just seven minutes had been played when Ricky-Jade Jones was forced off by an injury after slipping over and damaging a shoulder. He was replaced by Scott Banks. And eight minutes later the home side took the lead when Tjorve Mohr got on the end of a Justin Plautz free-kick.

The biggest chance of the game for the visitors fell to Marvin Schmitz in the 69th minute, a shot from the left corner of the penalty box that struck the upright. Blessin threw on fresh legs in Rawley St. John and Nick Schmidt for the final quarter of an hour, Scott Banks and James Sands the men to make way. Despite further chances for Nemeth and Afolayan in the closing stages, the Boys in Brown were unable to find an equaliser and suffered their first defeat in the second warm-up game of pre-season.
