FACTS AND FIGURES FOR THE 2016/17 SEASON – PART 3

During the season just ended we ran the rule over our forthcoming opponents week after week. We now wish to use the summer break to take a closer look at the season from the St. Pauli point of view. Find out in part three which players picked up the most bookings, who was subbed on and off the most times, and which young talents made their second division debuts for the club.

Nehrig and Sahin most booked

The Boys in Brown ended the 2016/17 campaign without a single sending-off for the third season in a row. Dynamo Dresden and Eintracht Braunschweig were the only other teams to come through the season without a red card. Lienen's side did collect 70 yellow cards, however. Bernd Nehrig and Cenk Sahin both served two one-match bans after racking up ten cautions, while Daniel Buballa, Aziz Bouhaddouz (both 7), Lasse Sobiech (6) and Christopher Buchtmann (5) all missed one game through suspension. In addition, Jan-Philipp Kalla picked up his fifth yellow card at Bochum on the final day.

Thy – king of the substitutes

Ewald Lienen's "favourite substitute" last term was Lennart Thy, who returned to the club on loan from Werder Bremen during the winter break. The striker was an ever-present in the squad during the successful second half of the season, coming on from the bench 11 times in total. Thy was closely followed by attacking wide men Cenk Sahin and Ryo Miyaichi, who were subbed on ten times.

Come in No28, your time is up

When one player comes on, another has to go off, logically enough, and no one made way more often than Waldemar Sobota last term. The attacking midfielder made 31 starts and was subbed off 12 times in total. Sobota was followed in this category by Bernd Nehrig (11), Cenk Sahin and Mats Møller Dæhli (both 10).

Waldemar Sobota made a total of 31 appearances in the 2016/17 season, featuring in the starting lineup each time. The midfield dynamo was subbed off more times than any other player. In the home game against Nürnberg he was replaced by Richard Neudecker (right).

Speedy Sahin

Not one but five Boys in Brown broke through the 34 km/h barrier in the season just ended. The fastest among them was Cenk Sahin, whose top speed was recorded at 34.49 km/h. Coming in behind the attacking midfielder were Philadelphia-bound Fafa Picault (34.43 km/h), Jeremy Dudziak (34.37), Daniel Buballa (34.07) and Ryo Miyaichi (34.02).

No one could match Cenk Sahin for pace during the 2016/17 campaign – the 22-year-old was the club's quickest player at 34.49 km/h.

Schneider and Empen on short time

Under-23 captain Jan-Marc Schneider was the player with the shortest playing time last season, registering 39 minutes three substitute appearances. Nico Empen clocked up 61 minutes in two run-outs, followed by Dennis Rosin with 122 minutes in three outings and Yi-Young Park on 180 minutes in two appearances.

Five debutants

As many as five young players celebrated their second-division debuts for the club in 2016/17. Midfielder Dennis Rosin, 20, made three appearances in the first half of the season, starting against Sandhausen and coming on as a substitute against Heidenheim and Bochum. Homegrown talent Brian Koglin made three starts in 14 days before the winter break. Ewald Lienen handed the then 19-year-old starts against Hertha BSC in the DFB Cup and in the next two league games against Nürnberg and Würzburg. Another player to make his second-division bow last term was Under-23 striker Nico Empen. A 17-minute debut at home against Düsseldorf was followed by 45 minutes against VfL Bochum. The 22-year-old Yi-Young Park made two appearances immediately after the winter break, featuring at centre-back from start to finish in the 1-0 home defeat against Stuttgart and then keeping things tight at left-back for 90 minutes in the 2-1 win at Braunschweig. Last but not least, Under-23 captain Jan-Marc Schneider made three appearances last season. A nine-minute debut against Stuttgart was followed by two brief appearances against Aue and Sandhausen.

Midfielder Dennis Rosin was the first youngster to make his second-division debut last term, coming on as a 13th minute substitute for the injured Christopher Buchtmann against Heidenheim.
