FACTS AND FIGURES FOR THE 2016/17 SEASON – PART 4

During the season just ended we ran the rule over our forthcoming opponents week after week. We now wish to use the summer break to take a closer look at the season from the St. Pauli point of view. In the fourth and final part, we tell you which players provided the most assists, which committed the fewest fouls and which were named in the kicker Team of the Day most often.

Three players with six assists

In Cenk Sahin, Aziz Bouhaddouz and Waldemar Sobota, three players finished joint top in terms of assists, each of them making six goals for a teammate during the 2016/17 season. Christopher Buchtmann delivered the decisive pass three times, Kyoungrok Choi twice. Marc Hornschuh, Daniel Buballa, Bernd Nehrig, Jeremy Dudziak, Ryo Miyaichi, Philipp Ziereis, Maurice Litka, Fafa Picault and Joel Keller all contributed one assist.

Fair play Mats

In the view of the match officials Lasse Sobiech committed 56 fouls last terms, nearly two per game, more than any other St. Pauli player. Attacking midfielder Mats Møller Dæhli was the league's fairest player in this respect, registering just three fouls in 13 appearances, a measly 0.29 infringements per match. Jeremy Dudziak was another to log very few fouls. Eight infringements in 20 appearances saw him finish third in the league rankings, one place behind 1860 Munich's Lumor (seven fouls in 16 matches).

Mats Møller Dæhli made 13 appearances for the club in the second half of the season. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder stood out not only for the way he played but also for being particularly fair in the tackle, committing just three fouls in total.

Kicker nominations

Last season kicker Sportmagazin included a St. Pauli player in its Team of the Day 20 times in total. Lasse Sobiech just edged the internal rankings thanks to a fourth inclusion after the win at Bochum on the final day. Aziz Bouhaddouz and Christopher Buchtmann were nominated three times each, Cenk Sahin and Waldemar Sobota twice. Daniel Buballa, Sören Gonther, Philipp Heerwagen, Marc Hornschuh, Mats Møller Dæhli and Philipp Ziereis all received one nomination.

On and off

To be subbed on and then back off again is probably the most humiliating thing that can happen to a footballer. Not one but two St. Pauli players suffered this fate during the 2016/17 season. In the 1-1 draw at VfL Bochum midfielder Richard Neudecker came on for the injured Daniel Buballa in the 17th minute before being withdrawn again in the final minute. In the 3-1 win at Düsseldorf in the second half of the season Johannes Flum was the 'victim', first entering the fray for the injured Bernd Nehrig and then going off again after 77 minutes. Neither Neudecker nor Flum had played badly in those games. Both were subbed off for tactical reasons – so there was absolutely no reason for either to feel humiliated.

Full house

With a total number of spectators of 499,822, an average of 29,401, attendances at the Millerntor were the third highest in the second division. Only the two relegated sides Stuttgart (862,197 total; 50,717 average) and Hannover (623,996 total; 36,706 average) registered more. In terms of utilisation, however (99.5 per cent), no ground was fuller than the Millerntor, which registered 13 sell-out crowds. Union Berlin's Alte Försterei recorded a utilisation rate of 94.8 per cent and was sold out five times. Third was the Eintracht Stadium in Braunschweig (91.9 per cent), but it only sold out twice.

The Millerntor was sold out 13 times in the 2016/17 season. The only games that did not attract a full house were the league fixtures against 1860 Munich (29,000 spectators), Aue (29,075), Kaiserslautern (29,037) and Karlsruhe (29,073) and the DFB Cup tie against Hertha BSC (29,123), the reason being that the away section was not completely sold out.
