FC St. Pauli hand Sascha Burchert new deal

FC St. Pauli have tied another player to the club beyond this season after director of sport Andreas Bornemann reached an agreement with goalkeeper Sascha Burchert to extend his contract, which was originally due to run until June 2023.

Burchert, 33, joined the Boys in Brown from Greuther Fürth in August 2022, having made 124 second division and 14 Bundesliga appearances for the Cloverleaves. He learned his trade at Hertha BSC, for whom he made a further 21 competitive appearances in the top two divisions, the DFB Cup and the Europa League.

Reaction to the new deal:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Sascha has accepted his role with us in outstanding fashion and been in very good shape from the outset. He's enabled us to take the competition for the goalkeeper spot to a new level, so it was clear to us very early that we'd like to continue our association."

Head coach Fabian Hürzeler: "Sascha is an enormously important member of the squad. With his experience and charisma, he's a constant source of guidance for his teammates. He's now a member of the players' committee as well, which underlines his importance for us, and he's shown repeatedly throughout his career that he's an absolutely dependable goalkeeper as well."

Sascha Burchert: "I'm delighted we were able to agree a new deal at an early stage. FC St. Pauli are a great fit for me in footballing terms and my family and I feel very much at home in Hamburg. I always want to improve myself and I'm at exactly the right team for that."
