FC St. Pauli name Fabian Hürzeler head coach

FC St. Pauli have a new head coach, with assistant coach Fabian Hürzeler taking up the post with immediate effect. Director of sport Andreas Bornemann described it as the optimum appointment to add new impetus without losing valuable time during the mid-season break.

"Fabian Hürzeler has been with FC St. Pauli since August 2020, so he knows the team and the analysts, doctors, physios and other staff," Bornemann said. "In his time as assistant coach and caretaker head coach, Fabian has shown he tackles challenges in a very structured way and offers concrete solutions," the director of sport added. "We looked at various options and are convinced Fabian is the optimum appointment for us in our situation," Bornemann continued. "In the current situation, it's important to give the team new impetus, clear processes and tools for achieving a balance between defensive stability and effective offence on the pitch.

Hürzeler, 29, thanked the club for the trust placed in him and spoke of a great assignment. "It's a privilege to be able to work here," Hürzeler said. "I saw it that way as assistant coach - and the same goes for the squad and all the backroom staff. I have a huge appetite for the work and, with unity and intensity, am convinced we'll be successful again." Hürzeler praised the team for their commitment. "Everyone’s pulling their weight really well and showing they want to do better. We see the preparations as a chance to practice clear patterns of play on the pitch."

The vacant assistant coach position is to be filled in the near future.
