Aljoscha Kemlein arrives on loan

FC St. Pauli have completed their first deal of the winter break. Central defensive midfielder Aljoscha Kemlein has joined the Boys in Brown on loan from Union Berlin until the end of the season after director of sport Andreas Bornemann agreed terms with officials of the Bundesliga club.

Kemlein learned his trade in the Union academy and made the step-up to the professional squad in the 2022/23 season. In the first half of the current campaign he made two Bundesliga appearances and one in the Champions League. Kemlein is also a Germany youth international, having made 13 appearances at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 level.

Reaction to the deal:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Aljoscha is a long way into his footballing development despite his young age, which is why we think he can be an option for the position in central midfield very soon. He's already demonstrated that he has all the physical and footballing attributes for that at Union Berlin. We look forward to a very hardworking player who is eager to learn, which makes him a very good fit for the group in terms of his character as well."

Head coach Fabian Hürzeler: "Aljoscha has everything we could want for the central position in defensive midfield. He's intelligent in the challenge and knows how to use his body. With his technical ability he's composed on the ball and finds intelligent solutions. The task now will be to integrate him into the group quickly, both on and off the pitch."

Aljoscha Kemlein: "I'm looking forward to the new assignment at FC St. Pauli and to showing what I can do in an ambitious team with a style of play that suits my capabilities. The club has established itself as a good address for players who want to take the next step in their development, and that's exactly what I'm aiming to do in the second half of the season."
