FC St. Pauli have signed 22-year-old striker Andréas Hountondji on a one-year loan deal from English Premier League club Burnley FC. The Benin international spent the second half of last season on loan at Standard Liège.
Hountondji is a versatile right-footed player (1.90m/6’2”) who can play across the front line but usually operates as a centre-forward. He holds Beninese and French citizenship and has played 14 times for Benin to date. In January he left Burnley on loan for Standard Liège, where he made 18 appearances in the Jupiler League, contributing four goals and two assists.
Reaction to the deal
Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "In Andréas we’ve gained a very interesting player for the squad who’ll add a valuable component to our attacking options. His physique, pace and power fit well with our playing philosophy. Andréas combines physical presence with dynamism, pace and technical potential."
Head coach Alexander Blessin: "Andréas impresses with well-timed runs in behind, excellent finishing with both feet, a natural presence in the air and assertiveness on the ball. He also has important qualities off the ball. He’s aggressive and quick in transition and sees pressing situations early, which means he does an important job for the whole team."
Andréas Hountondji: "I’m delighted to be at FC St. Pauli now and to get the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga. The talks with the director of sport and the coach were fantastic. The club has a special aura and I want to do my bit to ensure we have a successful season."
