FC St. Pauli sign centre-back Jakov Medić

FC St. Pauli have bolstered their defence for the coming season with the addition of Jakov Medić, 22, from third division side Wehen Wiesbaden. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.

The Croatian utility player made 36 league and two DFB Cup appearances for Wehen Wiesbaden in the 2020/21 season, scoring five goals and providing six assists. In the previous season he ran out 13 times in the second division. Before moving to Wiesbaden, Medić was contracted to FC Nürnberg from July 2018, making 26 appearances for the club's second team in the fourth-tier Regionalliga Bayern (two goals).

Reaction to the deal:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "We are getting a genuine 'mentality player' in Jakov. He made excellent progress at Wehen Wiesbaden in the season just ended and isn't at the end of his development yet. We'll work with him now to ensure he can take the next step with us."

Head coach Timo Schultz: "Jakov already has a lot to offer. He's ambitious, technically gifted and physically robust. We see him primarily as a centre-back, but he can also play in central midfield. He also carries a huge goal threat for a defender.“

Jakov Medić: "I'm delighted the St. Pauli officials have placed their trust in me and to become a player of this extraordinary traditional club. I hope I can run out with the team in front of fans at the Millerntor soon and experience this superb atmosphere. I had excellent and intensive talks with Andreas Bornemann and Timo Schultz and had the feeling straightaway that St. Pauli was exactly the right decision for my mentality and style of play."
