FC St. Pauli sign David Nemeth

FC St. Pauli have completed another acquisition for the new season in centre-back David Nemeth, 21, who joins the Boys in Brown from Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.

Nemeth joined Mainz from SV Mattersburg in September 2020 and went on to make six Bundesliga appearances and one in the DFB Cup for the 05ers. He spent the majority of the 2020/21 season on loan at Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz, where he made a total of 32 competitive appearances, scoring two goals and contributing one assist. Nemeth is part of the Austria Under-21 squad, having previously represented his country at Under-19 and Under-18 level.

Reaction to the deal

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "With this signing we are continuing our policy of banking on players with lots of development potential. David has all the physical and footballing attributes we look for in a centre-back. We're delighted he wants to take the next steps with us and see it as recognition of the good work that has been done in recent years."

Head coach Timo Schultz: "David is still young but gained regular match practice at a high level and did very well during his spell at Sturm Graz, so we're confident he can play a key role for us straightaway. His two-footedness is another plus point, as he offers flexibility in central defence and also copes well with different systems."

David Nemeth: "I had a good feeling from the word go in the talks with club officials. I was persuaded by the fact that the club puts its faith in young players and their development and gives them the necessary trust, so it was soon clear that I wanted to join St. Pauli. I'm looking forward to getting started soon and meeting my new teammates."
