The Boys in Brown have added the final piece to their goalkeeping setup with the signing of Simon Spari from Austria Klagenfurt under a deal reached by director of sport Andreas Bornemann and the management of the Austrian Bundesliga outfit. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.
Spari learned his trade at Sturm Graz, progressing through the ranks up to Under-18 level until 2019. He then spent around two years with the Under-19s of Karlsruher SC before gaining his first experience at senior level in the 2021/22 season at Floridsdorfer AC, for whom he made a total of 57 appearances in the Austrian second tier plus another seven in the cup. He then moved to Klagenfurt, where he established himself as first-choice keeper after missing the first five games of last season, going on to feature in all 27 remaining Bundesliga fixtures as well as two cup ties. He has also played five times for Austria's Under-21s.
Reaction to the deal
Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "We're delighted to be able to add the final piece to our goalkeeper group in Simon. He's still relatively young but has already proven himself in the professional game over more than one season. His attributes and the progress he’s made so far give us every confidence that he will take the next step with us."
Head coach Alexander Blessin: "Simon has good reflexes and is difficult to beat in one-on-ones. His passing is neat and tidy, enabling him to play a part in the build-up. Added to this are his positive charisma and the constant desire to improve."
Simon Spari: "I'm very excited about my new role in Hamburg. Moving to a Bundesliga club is a big step, of course, but I feel ready. I believe FC St. Pauli is the best place for me to develop as a player and I'm sure I can learn a lot from my goalkeeping colleagues."
