FC St. Pauli sign Marcel Hartel

FC St. Pauli have increased their options in midfield with the capture of Marcel Hartel, 25, from Bundesliga outfit Arminia Bielefeld. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.

Hartel made 58 league and cup appearances for Arminia, scoring one goal and providing 13 assists. Before making the switch to Bielefeld in the summer of 2019, Hartel had a two-stint at Union Berlin, for whom he contributed four goals and seven assists in 60 competitive appearances. The versatile midfielder learned his trade from 2002 onwards at FC Köln, where he played his first eight games as a professional.

Reaction to the deal:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "In Marcel Hartel we are getting a flexible, hard‑working midfielder with an attacking mindset who can be used in several positions in our system. He was an integral part of the team at both Arminia and Union and has the potential to play an important role for us, too, thanks to his experience."

Head coach Timo Schultz: "It was clear we were looking to strengthen our midfield, so in Marcel Hartel we're glad to have gained a player who knows his way around this league and has the ability to improve us right away."

Marcel Hartel: "FC St. Pauli are a great club with ambition. The fans, the stadium and the city are outstanding. The talks with the officials were very persuasive, it's a great overall package. I'm pleased it's worked out and I'm here now."
