FC St. Pauli sign midfielder Joel Chima Fujita

FC St. Pauli continue to progress their squad planning for the coming season with the addition of 23-year-old midfielder Joel Chima Fujita from Belgian top-division club VV St. Truiden.

Fujita made 27 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League last term plus six in the relegation play-offs. Prior to his stint in Belgium he played in Japan, winning the league title and the Super Cup with Yokohama F. Marinos. The right-footed midfielder (1.75m/5’9“) has played three times for Japan to date, having previously represented his country at Under-23 and Under-21 level. He can operate as both a No8 and a No6. The two clubs have agreed not to release any details of the transfer.

Reaction to the deal

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: “Joel offers an exciting mix of footballing intelligence, dynamism and defensive presence. He’s technically gifted, extremely well coached and despite his young age has international experience. We’re convinced he can help us develop our game.“

Head coach Alexander Blessin: “What I love about Joel is his courage and the clarity in hi  play. He’s a very busy player and has a good feel for the space. He intercepts balls and is neat and tidy in his passing, which makes him a great fit for us.“

Joel Chima Fujita: “FC St. Pauli are a club with a good reputation. The talks with the director of sport and the head coach convinced me that I can utilise my strengths here to help the team achieve success. I’m really looking forward to my new team, the city and, above all, to the fans.”
