St. Pauli captain Sören Gonther on Wednesday informed director of sport Andreas Rettig and the coaching team of his intention to turn down the offer of a new contract and leave the club at the end of the season.
There will be a reunion next season, however, as the 30-year-old central defender has elected to join league rivals Dynamo Dresden.
"While we regret Sören's decision, we respect it," said Rettig. "Sören has conducted himself exemplarily throughout. He's led by example on and off the pitch in the last five years and been a key player for us. We'd like to thank Sören and wish him all the best for the new challenge. He'll always be welcome at the Millerntor."
Gonther joined the Boys in Brown from Paderborn in 2012 and has made 93 appearances to date, scoring four goals. He was named club captain at the start of the 2014/15 season.
Many thanks for the time we've had together, Gonni, and all the best at your new club! YNWA
