SMITH: "IT JUST WASN'T ENOUGH"

In the end the Boys in Brown had to settle for a goalless draw at home to Hannover 96. What did the players and the two coaches have to say after the game?

Head coach Fabian Hürzeler: “We were very dominant over the 90 minutes. We took a while to get into the game but then we were able to get past Hannover and create opportunities. We knew we weren’t going to create seven or eight chances in each half against Hannover, but with a bit of luck we could have got the goal we were after. After half-time the flow of the game was disrupted and Hannover defended incredibly well. They gave us hardly any space and few opportunities to switch the play. I’m still happy with the performance, though. We did a lot right and had good balance at the back. Obviously the result leaves us feeling dissatisfied but we have to live with the point, analyse the game and try to do better next time.“

Johannes Eggestein: “It’s obviously difficult to play against a team who defend very deep and whose sole aim is to keep it at 0-0. I had one or two chances but all in all I think we played well. We obviously knew Hannover were capable of scoring from a single chance. In the end we can live with the point even though we wanted more, especially at home. Hannover aren't third for nothing, though, they're not bad, so we have to see the goalless draw for what it is."

Nikola Vasilj: “We had our chances and dictated the play for long periods. They were very defensive and out to get a point. I’m partly satisfied because we didn’t concede.“

Eric Smith: “Today we didn’t deserve to win or lose. It simply wasn’t enough. We did get a goal but unfortunately it was offside. Hannover score a lot of goals but we only gave them two chances. That’s very good. In the second half we couldn’t create as much pressure as we wanted. They defended intelligently. It was a high-intensity contest with lots of tackles.“

Stefan Leitl (Hannover coach): “We’re glad to take a point. It was the game we prepared the lads for. We knew there would be phases when we wouldn’t have much possession but we had some good moments as well. We were more compact in the second half and we’re pleased with the disciplined way we defended. The lads threw everything at it and we’re happy to take the point.“
