HÜRZELER: "FOUR GOALS ARE TOO MANY TO CONCEDE AT HSV"

The disappointment after the 4-3 derby defeat was tangible. Here’s what head coach Fabian Hürzeler and his players had to say in the mixed zone.

Head coach Fabian Hürzeler: “It was a superb game for the fans. I’ll be brief. We conceded too many goals. I’m not going to put a gloss on the defeat, four goals are too many to concede at HSV. We made too many individual errors and were unable to stop their momentum after the second goal. All the chances are worth nothing if you don’t put them away. We weren’t good enough in the duels, especially when they scored. Congratulations to HSV on winning the derby.”

Manolis Saliakas: “Congratulations to HSV on the win, but we were the better side in my opinion. Scoring in the derby is obviously good for me, but we ended up losing and that hurts. It was a very emotional game. We weren’t focused enough in the second half and conceded a lot of goals. We knew the quality HSV have, especially at home with the fans behind them, but in my view we were better.”

Elias Saad: “The disappointment is huge, of course, because we could have won today. It’s special to get a goal here and even just to play, but I’m sad and disappointed with the result. It was a very intensive game, both teams had lots of chances, and in the end it was simply down to us. I’ll keep going flat out to get more playing time.”

Leart Paqarada: “The equaliser came at the right time for them, of course. They came flying out of the traps in the second half and punished us in clinical fashion. I do think we played well, though. When you score three at HSV, it’s normally be enough, but unfortunately it wasn’t today because HSV were extremely efficient, which is why three goals weren’t enough for us tonight and that’s extremely disappointing.”

Jackson Irvine: “It’s very disappointing. We threw everything at it and it was a very intensive, fast-paced game. Very emotional. HSV exploited the key moments and won the key duels. It feels very much like the defeat at Schalke 04 last season, when we were leading away from home and then lost. We have to be more compact and better in the key challenges. It was still a good performance from us, though, one of the best in recent games. There are five games left now with 15 points at sake and we aim to focus on those games now.”

Tim Walter (HSV coach): “We were well in the game in the first 15 minutes, not least because  the fans in the stands were fantastic. We needed some time to regain our composure after conceding. It was a great moment for Jonas David when he equalised. It opened the door for us and we took that energy in with us at the break. We then tried to put them under pressure right away and take the fans with us. The atmosphere matched the action, both teams played well. We made it a bit difficult for ourselves in the end because we should never have conceded the third goal. We gave our all, though, and I’m very proud of my team and the fans today.”
