Irvine handed new deal

FC St. Pauli have sent a signal of continuity by handing captain Jackson Irvine an early contract extension. Director of sport Andreas Bornemann agreed terms with the Australia international over a long-term continuation of his original deal, which was set to run until June 2024.

Irvine moved to the Millerntor in July 2021 and has made 42 competitive appearances for the Boys in Brown to date, scoring four goals and providing four assists. The midfielder was previously on the books of Hibernian in Scotland, where he made 21 appearances (1 goal, 3 assists), and English Championship side Hull City, where he racked up ten goals and nine assists in 112 games. Irvine has also played for his country since 2013, contributing seven goals and eight assists in 49 outings, and recently qualified for the World Cup finals with the Socceroos.

Reaction to the contract extension

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Jackson has repeatedly proved his value for the team and the club and quickly grown into a leader and figure of identification. I think both parties appreciate what they have in each other. Our discussions were open and conducted in a spirit of trust and we're delighted they soon led to an agreement over a long-term association."

Head coach Timo Schultz: "The fact that Jackson is already captaining the team after just one season underlines his importance for us. With his will to win, he embodies traditional St. Pauli qualities and is an outstanding representative of the club both on and off the pitch. To have him in the squad in the years to come is a great signal."

Jackson Irvine: "It means a lot to me that St. Pauli see me as part of their future because I feel very much at home at the club and in the city. It's a great honour and I'm very proud to be able to lead the team as one of the captains after such a short time. I look forward to working on our development and collective success in the years to come."
