Makienok: "An amazing feeling for me"

No question about it, Simon Makienok stood out in a strong St. Pauli team thanks to his brace in the 3-2 home win against our cross-city rivals. It should therefore come as no surprise that the striker was the most sought-after man after the weekend off. On Monday, Makienok attended a news conference and spoke about...

...the celebrations after the derby win: "We didn't have a party. I was with my girlfriend and some friends and some of the players were there with their friends. We went to a café and had a few beers. We sat outside and had a good time for a couple of hours. It was really nice to have the weekend off, of course. I could feel that after the game a lot more people recognised me and were celebrating me and wanting to have a picture. It was a nice feeling for me to feel all the emotion from the people who enjoyed Friday evening as much as we did."

...his derby brace and the emotions afterwards: "I had a few situations in the first half where I tried to lay off the ball for Guido and Kofi and it didn't really work. At half-time I was thinking that maybe I should try to create something myself, so that's what I did and it turned into two goals. During the game it's always a good feeling when you score, but after my first goal I also knew it was only 2-1 and we had to keep going. After I scored my second goal, I started to feel we could win the game. When they made it 3-2, I was really nervous that my two goals might not be enough, but then, of course, as soon as the whistle blew, all the emotions started to come out and I could really enjoy it. I don't think I would have enjoyed it very much if we'd only got a draw. It was only after the game that I really enjoyed it."

Simon Makienok gave his side a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute and then made it 3-1 less than two minutes later.

...the atmosphere during and after the game: "It was an amazing feeling compared with the two games we played last season, it's just a completely different feeling when the fans are there. Even though the stadium was only a third full, you don't really think about it during the game. It's not like you look at the stands, but we can hear it and feel it and the fans made an atmosphere as if it was full. You feel the whole stadium is behind you and it really helps to push you forward. After the game, my teammates wanted me to go over to the fans to get the reception from them. The fans were singing my name and it was just an amazing feeling for me."

...the significance of the win: "We knew it wasn't an ordinary game and it means so much to so many people, not just us, and that we really wanted to win this game. And now we've won again. Doing it in front of the fans this time was really emotional."

...his goals for the season: "I didn't really think about it before the season because even though I didn't play much last season, I still felt I was an important person for the team because of my experience and my attitude. I just want to be a more central figure in the team this season, both on the pitch and off it."

...switching from winning the derby to an away game at Paderborn: "I think this is one of my biggest strengths. Whether things are going well or not so well, I'm very strong mentally and able to move on to the next game. I'm taking the confidence from winning the derby and scoring two goals and I'm very good at focusing on what I have to focus on. I know now that what we have to focus on is the game against Paderborn. We saw last Sunday how difficult it will be against them."
