FC St. Pauli have secured the services of another top talent in Igor Matanovic. Director of sport Uwe Stöver has handed the 15-year-old youth striker a professional contract from the start of the 2021/22 campaign. Matanovic will continue to learn his trade in the academy over the next two seasons before moving up to the senior squad with effect from 1 July 2021.

Matanovic, who has come through the club ranks since joining the Under-10s from Harburger TB, has established himself in our Under-17 Bundesliga side despite still being eligible to play for the Under-16s. He has made 16 appearances so far this season, scoring seven goals and making another five.

Reaction to the deal

Director of sport Uwe Stöver: "We're delighted to have tied another promising talent to the club. Igor has lots of potential and the task now will be to develop that potential over the next few years."

Academy boss Roger Stilz: "Igor has been with us since the Under-10s and has all the attributes of a typical No9. He's an intelligent, technically gifted and physically strong player with a good finish. He's also committed to the club and already thinks like a professional. We're convinced he will make his way at senior level after another two years in the academy."

Igor Matanovic: " I'm really happy to take the next step towards professional football at my club, FC St. Pauli, and am grateful for the trust that has been placed in me. I'm sure I can make optimum progress here and I sense the desire of the club to support my individual development and get the best out of me."
