St. Pauli's second division status was confirmed for another season on Sunday afternoon when Arminia Bielefeld drew at VfL Bochum and Erzgebirge Aue lost at VfB Stuttgart. Director of sport Andreas Rettig hailed not only the players and coaching staff but also the club boards.
"When the second half of the season kicked off no one would have thought it possible that we'd be safe with two games left to play," said the 54-year-old, bearing in mind the measly tally of just 11 points going into the winter break. "But you see what can be achieved through team spirit and togetherness. It's absolutely exceptional."
Rettig continued: "The battle against relegation was won in the dressing room. And it wasn't just the players on the pitch who made a major contribution but precisely those who sat on the bench or weren't in the squad. The same goes for the coaching staff, who set the team up perfectly for every game."
The coaching staff and the players were not the only ones to come in for high praise: "Special thanks go to the club boards, who stayed calm and acted very circumspectly even in the most difficult phases. The incredible sense of togetherness throughout the club was the key to success," said Rettig.
