St. Pauli sign keeper Sören Ahlers

FC St. Pauli have strengthened their goalkeeping options by bringing in Sören Ahlers. The 23-year-old shot-stopper last played for FC Schalke 04's second team and impressed club officials as a triallist.

Ahlers made a total of 58 fourth and fifth-tier appearances for the Royal Blues, keeping 24 clean sheets in the process. He had previously played for FC Bocholt and in the youth section of Wuppertaler SV.

Reaction to the deal:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "In Sören Ahlers we've found a very good solution for our third goalkeeper position. He's still young but has already gathered a certain degree of experience at his previous clubs. We decided to do the deal after he made a good impression in training."

Head coach Timo Schultz: "Sören convinced us with the way he performed on the pitch and he's also a good fit for the team in terms of his character. He's a good addition to our existing goalkeepers. Like every professional, he should aspire to put pressure on the players in front of him."

Sören Ahlers: "The team and the coaching staff made a very good impression on me and so I'm delighted to have gained the confidence of the officials and get the chance to play for FC St. Pauli. The club stands for a set of values that I can identify with and I'm proud to be a part of it now."
