TIMO SCHULTZ NAMED NEW HEAD COACH

FC St. Pauli has set the course for the 2020-21 season with the appointment of Timo Schultz as new head coach. The 42-year-old, who has been at the club in the role of player and coach for the last 15 years, has been handed a contract until 30 June 2022.

"In the talks with Timo, I sensed a lot of passion and commitment," said director of sport Andreas Bornemann. "Timo is a young coach who knows the club and what is required like the back of his hand and has already practised the style of play we favour with his teams at youth level – active, attacking football. In his work in the youth section, he's also shown that he's able to bring teams on and stabilise them. With his ideas and desire, he's therefore a great fit for the club and our objectives. I look forward to working with 'Schulle'."

Timo Schultz can't wait to get started: "There was no question I was going to accept this offer. After many years of coaching in the academy, it's the ideal transition into the professional game for me. We go into the new campaign with a certain humility after last season, of course, but also with clear ideas. I'm looking forward to my new team and can hardly wait to develop something with the lads that will make our fans happy.“

Club president Oke Göttlich added: "In his 15 years at FC St. Pauli, Timo has progressed through every area of the club and constantly improved. The club has set out to develop not only players but also its own coaches, so I'm all the more delighted with the decision of Andreas Bornemann to recruit a coach, in Timo Schultz, who comes from within our own ranks."

Timo Schultz made 138 appearances (12 goals, 9 assists) at senior level for FC St. Pauli plus 18 appearances for the second team during his playing career. After hanging up his boots, he initially spent 12 months with the second team as assistant coach to Jörn Grosskopf and also operated as team manager for the first team (2011 to 2012). He gained additional experience serving as assistant coach of the first team under Michael Frontzeck, Roland Vrabec, Thomas Meggle and André Schubert from 2012 to 2014. Schultz then switched to the youth section, taking charge of the Under-17 Bundesliga team (2015 to 2018) and before assuming the role of head coach of the Under-19s (Youth Bundesliga) in 2019. He secured his coaching badge in 2018.
