BOYS IN BROWN OVERCOME WIESBADEN IN FRIENDLY

Day 5 of training camp began with a video analysis session and a quick workout on the hotel training ground before the 70km drive to Oliva Nova, where Jos Luhukay's side took on fellow second-division outfit Wehen Wiesbaden in a 120-minute warm-up game. Goals from Boris Tashchy, Henk Veerman (2), Christopher Buchtmann and Ryo Miyaichi eased the Boys in Brown to a 5-2 win over their league rivals. Philipp Tietz and Törles Knöll were on target for Wehen.

Head coach Jos Luhukay used the opening friendly of the year to try out different things, beginning with a lone striker tasked with disrupting the opposition in their build-up play. The Boys in Brown made a bright start to the first quarter of the 2 x 60-minute game and on 18 minutes created a decent opportunity for Finn Ole Becker, who narrowly missed the target when promisingly placed.

In the second quarter of the encounter, the Boys in Brown gradually took control and eventually got their reward for their busier approach. Luca Zander broke down the right flank and fed Boris Tashchy, who controlled the ball, turned his marker and left Wehen keeper Heinz Lindner no chance with a firm drive. Luhukay's charges continued to hog the play in the closing stages and went in at the half well worth their one-goal lead.

As planned, Luhukay fielded a completely different team after the interval. The Boys in Brown began well through Ryo Miyaichi, whose low ball in narrowly failed to find a taker. Just a minute later, the Japanese midfielder displayed perfect precision in picking out Henk Veerman with a neat pass, and he netted from close range. The joy over the second goal was short-lived, however, as Philip Tietz converted from the spot for Wehen after a foul in the box by Marvin Knoll. Just before the final break, Christopher Buchtmann restored his side's two-goal advantage after more good work by the lively Miyaichi.

More goals were to follow in the fourth quarter. Though the Boys in Brown continued to dictate the play, Rüdiger Rehm's side had more impact in front of goal, Törles Knöll reducing the deficit on 96 minutes. The goal had little effect, however, and Veerman soon restored his team's two-goal lead, showing good vision to spot Wehen keeper Lukas Watkowiak out of position and slotting home at the near post. Eight minutes from time, Miyaichi ended the scoring with a curling effort into the top corner to ensure the Boys in Brown ran out deserved 5-2 winners in their opening friendly of the year.

Head coach Jos Luhukay: "I think we played very well in both halves. We kept creating overload situations in midfield to play out our attacks and scored some really nice goals. Overall, it was a very pleasing workout, having spent the last few days in training working very hard to improve our defensive work and strengthen our attacking game."
